This is a Buddhist dharma talk and guided meditation. Some insight and background information would help you better understand what equanimity is.
“Buddha” is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “one who is awake.” This title was given to the founder of the Buddhist religion, Siddartha Gautama, who lived 2,500 years ago in northern India. He grew up living a very rich, sheltered life, from which he left to explore the world. Upon his departure from his palace, he came across the 4 sightings. He saw an elderly man, a diseased man, a dead man, and a religious ascetic, a man who had chosen to lead a homeless life of solitude and abstinence from all forms of indulgence. He then became an ascetic himself before discovering the Buddhist doctrine of the Middle Way. His experience with asceticism did not lead to salvation, so he now rejected that lifestyle. He taught that a healthy spiritual life depends on a healthy physical life. Now,G Gautama was able to turn his focus inward. He entered a meditative trance. Under the Bodhi Tree, he entered different layers of mindful awareness and discovered the true meaning of life. That night, he achieved enlightenment. This, essentially, is the main goal of Buddhism. Upon this experience, the Buddha discovered the Four Noble Truths. They were:
1. There is dukkha [suffering] in the world.
2. This suffering arises from attachment to desires
3. The cession of suffering is the result of the cession of attachment to desires.
4. Freedom from suffering is possible through the practice of the 8-Fold Path.
Buddhist teachings are full of lists. You can see that this list of the 4 Noble Truths alludes to another list- the 8-Fold Path. However, before digressing to this teaching of how to attain nirvana, I will conclude with the 4 Divine Abodes, which are explored further in the video. The last of these is Equanimity, which is our focus for this dharma talk and meditation. Enjoy!
